Community Garden Highlight: Laurel Ave. Community Garden

Over the past month, Laurel Ave. Community Garden has benefited greatly from workdays and dedicated volunteers. The site has two new energetic and motivated coordinators, Gary Keiser and Peg Johnston. With their leadership, and the work of volunteers from Binghamton University group I.D.E.A.S. and service fraternity APO, loads of compost and wood chips were distributed throughout the garden. The wood chips will help suppress weed growth in the pathways and the amended beds will have more fertility for next season. In addition to bringing in wood chips and compost, vicious weeds were removed, shaded beds were relocated to an area receiving plenty of sun and several beds were seeded with winter rye grass. Thank you to our volunteers, from the student groups to the community garden members and neighbors, for getting involved. Big thank you to Gary and Peg for stepping up as site coordinators for Laurel Av. Community Garden!
