This Sunday, September 25th, Binghamton community members will sit down together over a potluck meal as part of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY)’s 2nd Annual NY Locavore Challenge, a month-long campaign aimed at engaging consumers across the state in eating local organic foods. All across the state of NY, from Niagara Falls to the tip of Long Island, groups sharing a common interest in their concern over the current state of the US food system and a commitment to consuming food grown from local organic farms will sit down to eat together.
The Binghamton Locavore Potluck will take place Sunday, September 25 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 83 Main Street (Entrance to the downstairs dining room is off of Arthur St.). Community members are invited to join in celebrating the culinary bounty of our region, and the farmers and producers who make it possible to eat so well!
Anyone is welcome to participate, and attendees are asked to bring a dish to share, a serving utensil, your own place setting (plate, utensils, napkin), and information about your ingredients. Try to source all ingredients locally, but if you need to use olive oil, salt, spices, etc, that is fine. Many local ingredients can be found at Binghamton area farmers markets.
In conjunction with the Locavore Potluck, Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments (VINES) will be holding a Silent Auction to raise funds for remediating flood damage that occurred at the Binghamton Urban Farm, as well as ongoing improvements to community garden sites throughout Binghamton.
Many fabulous items have been generously donated for the Silent Auction by local businesses and individuals, including RiverRead Books, Lost Dog Café, the Art Mission & Theater, Cyber Cafe West, Skoloff Valley Farm, Kovarik Hardware, Vishnu’s Couch Yoga, and Extended Harvest. Items for auction include gardening tools, local produce, a one-month frozen fruit and vegetable CSA share, locally made crafts, gift certificates, books, and piano lessons. There’s even more, but you’ll have to come to see it all! Donations of items for the auction are still being accepted.
