Planning your garden.

Are you interested in gardening, having a plot at a VINES community garden, or just want to learn about growing food in a small space? Planning your garden means thinking about and accounting for many things. From healthy spacing, overall plot design, sun/shade exposure, when and where to plant certain crops, managing pests, and caring for your soil, there’s a lot to consider!

A great place to start is thinking about the plants that have the easiest time thriving in your particular growing zone. For guidance on determining your zone and what you might want to plan, visit: garden.org/nga/zipzone/

Beyond that, what do you want to eat a lot of this year? Garden vegetable bounties can sneak up on you, so it’s important to think about what you know you want to use! Garden Bureau is calling 2025 the year of the pea: ngb.org/year-of-the-pea/

Once you know what you can plant and what you want to plant, then you can dive into some of the more plant-specific questions like how many seeds do I need? How far apart should I plant my seeds? How often should I water? Here’s a great overview of some of those fundamentals: almanac.com/vegetable-gardening-for-beginners
