Planning Our Garden Space

Plan plan plan. Although we know nothing ever goes according to plan, having a plan in place makes most things easier in the garden. Whether it’s one raised bed, a ½ acre homesteading garden or a biodiverse perennial garden.

In order to begin planning your garden planting, go to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to determine which plants are most likely to thrive in your environment.

Knowing the dimensions of your space is key to knowing what you can grow.

Then you can decide what type of garden bed you want to grow in. And then grow the things you and your household like to eat the most.

Attend a VINES Green Thumb workshop, https://vinesgardens.org/events/ , to get a great overview of garden layout, orientation, square-foot gardening and all sorts of beginner tips. It might even be helpful to the most intermediate of us gardeners.
